Smartphone versions and compatibility: what to check

The model name is only the starting point when choosing a smartphone. Before ordering, identify the exact hardware reference and the software supplied with the configuration you have selected. This guide helps you prepare a compatibility check; it does not certify a particular phone.

Global version, regional version and ROM

Ask what a version label means for the actual phone being sold. Confirm separately the hardware reference, intended market and installed software. A label such as “Global ROM” is not, by itself, proof that the hardware is identical to another regional version. Ask whether the software is original or has been changed, which languages are available and how updates are delivered.

4G and 5G: compare the exact reference

Obtain the manufacturer's network specifications for that reference, then compare them with the requirements of your mobile operator in your country. For use in France, check the places where you need reception using the operator's coverage information or Arcep's mobile network map. A coverage map does not confirm that a particular imported handset will work with every service.

Ask your operator about voice calls over 4G, Wi-Fi calling and eSIM if you need them. Confirm both device support and support for your plan. Do not treat “5G”, “dual SIM” or a matching brand name as a complete compatibility test.

Google services, apps and Android Auto

If Google apps matter to you, ask about Google Play services and Play Protect certification on the supplied configuration. Google explains how to check device certification. Also check the requirements of any banking, work or streaming app you rely on.

For Android Auto, verify the phone, its software and your car or head unit. Wired and wireless connections have different requirements. Consult Google's current Android Auto requirements and your car manufacturer's guidance before buying specifically for this feature.

Use the PhoneOSLab compatibility module

On the product page, open Compatibility check and select the relevant version. Treat items marked “to verify” as questions to resolve before ordering. An unconfirmed feature should not be treated as guaranteed support.

What to include in your request

  • The product link and selected storage, colour and version.
  • Your country, operator and the exact model reference, if available.
  • The functions you need: 4G/5G, eSIM, Wi-Fi calling, Google services or a named app.
  • For Android Auto, the car or head-unit model and whether you need wired or wireless use.

Send your compatibility questions to PhoneOSLab before ordering. You can also read our smartphone buying guide or compare the phones in the catalogue.
